The retrieval is a short 15 min procedure at the Olive clinic.
Eggs are retrieved by inserting an ultrasound probe into the vagina to visualize the follicles, and passing a thin needle through a channel on the probe to gently suction out the eggs. You will be given oral and IV pain medication, as well as local anesthesia. Most patients experience some cramping and pressure sensations. Typically, the procedure takes only 3-5 minutes per ovary.
What to Expect in an Egg Retrieval
Your egg retrieval occurs in the morning at Olive and you will be given detailed information by a nurse 48 hours prior to this procedure. The procedure takes about 20 to 30 mins, and afterwards we will monitor your vital signs for 44 to 60 mins. Before you leave the clinic, we will let you know how many eggs were retrieved.
You must be accompanied home by a responsible adult after your procedure, due to the pain medication. You should not drive or sign legal documents for 24 hours after the pain medication.
It is normal to have light bleeding or spotting and cramping after this procedure. Extra Strength Tylenol® every 4 to 6 hours for the first few days following egg retrieval is recommended if you experience pain.
